Why Does Compressed Air Need a Dryer?
A compressor draws in atmospheric air, and that air always contains water vapour. Compression concentrates the moisture; as the air cools in the receiver and the pipework, it condenses into liquid. Water reaching the end of the line causes everything from corrosion to paint defects.
The only meaningful criterion when selecting a dryer is pressure dew point. It must sit below the lowest temperature the line will see. A refrigerant dryer is sufficient for general in-plant use, while lines exposed to freezing or sensitive production need a desiccant type.

Should I buy a refrigerant or a desiccant dryer? expand_more
A refrigerant dryer giving a +3 °C dew point is enough for in-plant lines and general workshop use. If your line runs through an area at risk of freezing, or you have a sensitive process such as food, pharmaceuticals or electronics, you need a desiccant type.
How is dryer capacity determined? expand_more
Capacity should be chosen against real operating conditions, not the compressor's nominal flow. Ambient temperature, inlet air temperature and working pressure all affect it directly; in a hot compressor room the catalogue figure drops.
Is a dryer enough on its own? expand_more
No. Effective moisture management works in stages: air receiver, water-separating filter, pre-filter, dryer, after-filter and automatic condensate drainage all work together. The most commonly omitted link is automatic drainage.
